What are UV rays?
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is designed to protect our skin against harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun known as UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper than the skin and are a big factor in what lead to our skin aging over time. UVB rays have a more instant impact causing sunburn and is also commonly linked to cancer. When you wear a broad-spectrum SPF like Saltee, you are protecting your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. It is important to know that not all SPF brands are broad-spectrum, so make sure you check the bottle!
So why all year?
We all know the importance of wearing SPF while on holiday and in the sunnier months but not many people realise the importance of wearing SPF during the cooler and cloudier days. In fact, we have found that at least 27% of avid skincare consumers don’t wear SPF at all, whatever the weather. We also found that the majority of consumers daily moisturiser doesn’t contain any form of SPF. But did you know that up to 90% of UV rays penetrate the clouds, even when you can’t see the sun? So, even when we think our skin is protected because the sun isn’t shining, it really isn’t!
Why Saltee?
When Saltee started in 2019, Sam and Patrick wanted to create an SPF brand that felt like a luxury product to take on holiday and not the usual chore to apply.
As Saltee grew and we learnt more about the suncare market, it became clear that there was little education around the need to wear SPF year-round. Sam and Patrick therefore set about to create a luxurious and light daily SPF that could be an easy addition to anyone’s morning skincare routine and protect them all year round.
This was a more challenging brief than in the past as it needed to be a broad-spectrum factor 50 but feel like a light luxurious moisturiser. After a number of formulations and working closely with our chemist, Stacey Irving, City Serum SPF + was created.
