Founders Guide to a Happy Half Term

Plot your sunny escape, the Saltee way

It’s that time of year when we are all normally looking forward to the summer and anticipating plans for some time off under sunnier skies. Saltee Co-founder Sam Richardson is reminiscing on pre-lockdown travel and shares his top tips and destination hot spots.  Just like you, he can’t wait to pack his bags and make some more half term memories with the kids.

So start plotting the perfect adventure with sunny times waiting ahead.

In recent times for me the beginning of summer has often been the May half term break – the first opportunity for those with school age children to head off for a break and kick off the summer.

Whilst this year many of the normal travel options have been curtailed by COVID my regular option would always be to visit Corfu in the Greek Ionian Islands. I have family living there and have visited it at least annually for the past thirty years. The end of May is a perfect time to visit as the island is still green and full of wild flowers, yet to be parched brown by full heat of summer. The crystal clear waters are just beginning to warm for refreshing post lunch swims and the mercury hits the mid-20s during the middle of the day.

This time of year is a great time to visit the Med as the days are long, sun warm and resorts relatively quiet with many fewer tourists than July & August. Our days are spent mainly near the water, visiting beachside tavernas by boat, jumping off jetties into the azure waters and enjoying the local seafood lunches. Land based diversions include at least one visit to the island capital Corfu Town, a beautiful gem of Venetian architecture and esoteric boutiques to explore in between frappes ordered from the outdoor cafes that line the old cricket square. As much of a fixture is the annual trip to Aqualand, a vast water park, where each year my boys get bolder in their choice of slides they’ll take on. The near vertical ‘White hole’ could creep on to the agenda for this year’s visit!

What each May half term trip does signify to me at least is to fire the starting gun on summer with the anticipation of long evenings, bbqs and outdoor entertaining and hopefully another chance (or two) to sea swim in the Med before season’s close.

Wherever you’re headed this year, remember to take Saltee with you on your next adventure. With formulations suitable for the whole family, you can protect your skin with ultra-high UVA and UVA suncare for the face and body.
